Making do....

Well our desktop computer decided to break last week and Jason hasn't had time to fix it yet.  He has one more thing to try and I am really praying it will work.  We have backed up most of our pictures but some would be lost.  Thank goodness I have put some of them on Shutterfly already.  If it weren't for this ancient lap top though I wouldn't be a happy mama without any connection to my outside world:)  It is working for now so I am thankful for that!!  I do not have a picture from our weekend hike last weekend to post on here but luckily I was getting my post together and had put some of the pictures on my shutterfly page, so feel free to go look at the album.  It was  fun day of hiking and playing at the park and enjoying the absolutely beautiful fall weather we have been having! (to access our shutterfly page go to the right side of my blog and you can click on the link....this laptop will not let me insert the link in this text).  The boys are getting easier to hike with now and it so fun to watch them and teach them.  They do great getting to the destination but we still need to build up to the return hike.

On another note I was wanting some opinions from any readers out there.  I am wanting to do something like an adven calendar with the boys.  Does anyone have any suggestions on a good one that they could understand?  I basically want to just have some things that we can do through out  the month to start teaching them the real reason we celebrate Christmas and not let it just be about gifts.  I am open to any ideas of traditions or ways you celebrate or teach throughout the holidays.  I am also looking at a little tykes nativity so they could play with one (the one I have is ceramic made by my mom years ago).....anyone have any opinions on that or do you think it is worth the investment?    Just thought I would put these questions out there and see what I could come up with to do.  We are going to start the Elf on the Shelf tradition this year...we got the book when Caden was a baby from my Aunt and I am really looking forward to reading it and hopefully watching the boys get into it.

I had to put some kind of picture with the post so I have some oldies on here and chose the Christmas Card picture we took of Caden when he as a baby!  Isn't he just too cute!!!

Lea,

Lego(Playmobil) makes a cute Lego people nativity set, but I'm not sure if the "lego-ness" would take away from the "holiness" of the nativity. I thought it was cute...not sure if the boys are into legos yet.

I love keeping up with you guys through your blog...keep it up! Miss ya!

Hey! My mom gave Will a Fisher Price LIttle People Nativity set a few years ago, and he loooooves it. Although I agree about the "holiness" part--it's a little weird watching him load up Mary, Joseph, and the wise men into his Little People school bus.

I did some advent activities last year from this site and plan to use it again this year, it has a lot of fun ideas: http://homeschooling.about.com/cs/unitssubjhol/a/advent125.htm

I wish I had gotten the fisher price nativity set years ago. I love the idea of getting that and putting it away after Christmas and only getting it out for Christmas.

Check my fb page with my question on the Jesse Tree. My friend Jennifer gave lots of link to good ideas.

We celebrate advent with time each night for family devotions and light the candle. Wish we had started that years ago too.

We have the Little People Nativity set as well. My kids love it. I also have a magnetic advent calendar that I got at here It lets you create a navity scene by adding a new piece each day. When we pull out a star, we talk about the meaning. When we pull out each of the wise men, for one we might talk about how they found Jesus, for another we might talk about the gifts they brought, and for the third we might talk about why they referred to him as a king. And so on for each of the pieces. It is one of my favorite Christmas traditions.

We also like to try to do some kind of service for Christmas. Like doing Toys for Tots or making up hygiene kits for the homeless shelter or putting together Christmas Dinner boxes for the local abuse center. My kids have loved doing that kind of thing.

Sorry this was so long!
