Family Hike

Last Saturday was a beautiful day so we decided to go for a hike to a cave we have visited before.  The boys have gotten better with this hike.  They made it walking the entire way there and Caden walked the entire way back and Blake only had to be carried for the last little stretch!  It is so funny to see them in their camo light up hats:)

When we got to the cave Daddy had to enter in and assess the area.  You could feel the cool air and the wind coming through the cave....Caden's response was "Is it breathing?" They were very anxious to get the OK to enter in.  Blake was eager to explore every little hole he found.

Blake's energy meter was depeleted by the time we reached the cave but he had done so well on the hike.  We realized that he had eaten breakfast pretty early and hadn't had a snack so he was eager for one by the time we reached the bluff looking over the river.  We snacked and hung out a bit more and headed back through the cave while they were still energized from snacks!

SOOO....the highlight for me was my way too close for comfort encounter with a critter I totally wasn't expecting to see this time of year.  It had been rather chilly the night before and even that day so I really had my guard down and wasn't really watching as carefully for snakes.  We were about to head back to the car from the cave and I started up the trail ahead of everyone and looked down with my foot in mid air right before it would have come down on the below snake!  I made some little louder than normal sounds and called for Jason....I just had a feeling it was poisonous.  Jason came up quickly and looked at it and didn't say much.  I think he was afraid to tell me it was a rattlesnake.  It was a baby one but still a snake none the less!!  The snake was really cold and not moving fast at all.  He was trying to come out and get on the rocks to warm up!  Jason took the stick and moved the snake off the path.  Needless to say the rest of the hike I kept having chills and scanned everywhere my feet went!!

I would have died. I am terrified of snakes! But aside from that, it does sound like a wonderful day. The area you live in up there is so beautiful.
