WWYD???

"What Would You Do?"
I have two scenarios and am just curious from my readers out there what you would do if in the same situation.
The first one happened a few days ago. I was in a town nearby and trying to consign some old clothes of the boys. I was waiting for them to sort through my things and had already looked around so I ended up sitting in a chair near the door. A lady walks in with a little girl in a small stroller (the girl was probably 4). She picks up two items off a side shelf and didn't really even look at them, just picked them off the hook and sat them down lower. I thought it was strange and wondered why she didn't hang them back on the hook. Then she bent over and sat her rather large purse on the floor and brushed the two items into the bag. She picked her bag back up and hung it back on her arm. I then noticed her go over to some hair bow holders that went all way to the ground. Her bag went to the ground once again and I watched her place several of them in her purse (all the while she was watching the several workers there who were totally just visiting and not paying attention). I have never witnessed this before and was really taken aback and wasn't sure if I should do anything or just ignore it....it wasn't "hurting" me. I was so amazed I decided I would let them know and at least I had done my part. I walk up to the counter and had to say "excuse me" twice.....shows how much they were paying attention to the customers. I asked one of the ladies if I could ask her a question about something over on the other side of the store. I told her what I had witnessed and she thanked me and told the other workers. They did scatter and tried to follow and/or watch the shoplifter. She eventually asked a question or two, made her way around the store and left. They didn't confront her (I guess technically they couldn't since they didn't see it??) and she got away with merchandise that is so not even worth the "price" she could have paid if caught. The store worker said she had tried to glance in her bag but couldn't see anything. So I am not sure if I was "tattling" like I tell the boys not to do or if I did the right thing. I at least don't have to "wish" I would have said anything. Anyone want to give their opinion....it is okay if you think I was wrong??

The second scenario is if you were in a department store of some sort....Target, Walmart, Old Navy, etc and passed by a shelf and saw a $5 bill sitting there....what would you do? No one is anywhere around the bill. Let me assure you there is no doubt what I would do if it were a ring, phone, wallet, etc....but this is a plain $5 unmarked and no way to identify it as 'yours'. Would you turn it in, leave it, or take it??

That is so sad about that woman stealing--I've heard it's happening more and more due to the economy. I think you did the right thing; confronting the thief herself would have been awkward (maybe you could have yelled across the store, "Ma'am, you seemed to have accidentally dropped some bows in your purse!"--just kidding!).

I'd turn the $5 bill into customer service (where the customer service rep would probably pocket it). Unless we were financially destitute and my kids were hungry, in which case I might see it as a gift from God. (Maybe that's what the woman in the consignment shop thought those bows close to the ground were. :-)

I think you did the right thing on the lady who was stealing. I really don't understand how people can live with themselves if they do stuff like that.

The $5, may be a gift from God. I would ask if anyone had lost any money and if not, take my gift and spend it all in the Dollar Spot!

I agree. I totally think you did the right thing in mentioning the shoplifting to the store clerks. It is sad that someone feels the need to resort to that kind of behavior. I feel really bad for people like that.

As far as the 5 dollars is concerned, if I were inside a store, I would probably turn it in to customer service. If it were outside one the ground, I would probably look around to see if someone was around who may have dropped but if no one was missing it, I would pocket it.

You did the right thing at the first store for sure. As for the $$ - that's tough! If I was going to be totally honest, I don't think I would turn it in...maybe I should though??

Thanks all for commenting! I just hate she did get away with it.
As for the second scenario....maybe I should have turned it in so that the employee I gave it to could have benefited, but I didn't. Rest assured that if it was something identifiable I would SOOO turn it in no question! I am always open to conviction or changing my ways so I thought I would take a poll:)

Wow! I suppose you could have gone and "shopped" right next to her and asked if that was one of those new "green" shopping bags "very nice, I'd love to get one too, where'd you buy it?!!"

As for the money I've gone to the office people before and said I've found some money here is my phone # if anyone reports having lost money could you please have them call me?

Then of course they'd be able to identify the amount.
